Attendance is a priority in school and will continue to be so. If your child is absent for any reason it is vital that you contact school: phone, write or speak to a member of staff. If you are taking a holiday during term time it is vital you receive permission from the Head teacher. If we have concerns about a child's attendance we will contact their parent/carer. If absences fall into a regular pattern we will be seeking the advice of the schools Education Welfare Officer. We cannot raise standards if your child is absent, either through your child missing odd days or being late and not participating in whole class introductions and explanations.

Unauthorised Absence 1.13%

LOST PROPERTY
During any school year, the lost property boxes outside the community room contains a huge amount of clothing, shoes, pumps and bags – ALL NAMED ITEMS CAN BE RETURNED TO THEIR OWNERS IMMEDIATELY – Please make sure that your child’s belongings are marked with their name.
School Meals
Children have the choice of either a packed lunch from home or 2 course lunch from school. The cost of a school meal is
£1.60 per day or £8.00 per week for children in Nursery through to Year 6.
This is due every Monday and is paid at the school office. Children may also bring a packed lunch, but for safety reasons drinks in glass bottles should not be brought into school. Please ensure that lunch boxes are labelled on the outside with your child’s name.
As part of our commitment to the National Healthy Schools Initiative we do not allow chocolate bars or fizzy drinks and limit packets of crisps to one.
If you feel that your child is entitled to a free school meal please contact the Education Benefits office on Leeds 0845 1270113.
Medicines
If at all possible, your child should not bring tablets or medicines into school. If it is necessary, and a doctor has prescribed the medication, you must give written permission for the medicine to be given. All medicines must be kept in the office and be collected when school finishes. Please inform us if you know of any medical conditions which might affect your child’s progress at school.
School Security
In order to protect the staff and pupils of the school and their belongings, security locks have been fitted to the main entrance and closed circuit television is now in operation both inside and outside of school. We also ask that any visitors to school sign in at the office and wear a special visitors badge, which makes themselves known to both pupils and staff. The purpose of these additional security measures is to ensure that the staff and pupils have as much protection as possible.
Parental Consultation
We very much welcome you in school at any time. We appreciate parents’ help in working alongside pupils in activities such as art, craft, sewing, reading to small groups and baking. Parents are also welcome for special occasions such as Cultural Week, Harvest Festival, Christmas and Easter celebrations both at school and at Church.
The School holds termly parents evenings for you to come into school and discuss with your child’s class teacher the progress they are making, to pass on important information to you about SATs and to discuss any issues you wish to raise.
If you want to speak to your child’s class teacher at another time, the most convenient times are before 8.50am and after 3.20pm.
At the end of the school year you will receive a written report, which you can discuss with your child’s class teacher.
We understand that your child’s education is a partnership between us and you. To ensure this partnership is long standing, you will be given a copy of the home school agreement as part of the admissions pack when your child starts school. This outlines both our expectations of the behaviour of your child and your expectations of the school.
Homework
One very valuable way of regularly keeping parents in touch with the work children are doing in school is through homework. Every class from Nursery to Year 6 receives reading books to take home and practise.
We also encourage parents to discuss the story with their children. In addition to this children will also be given spellings, times tables to learn or work reinforcing ideas that started in class. A more thorough homework timetable will be given to your child either at the start of the year or on starting at school. We expect that all homework is the pupil’s own work, and it is handed in on the designated day. Children are encouraged to complete their homework and are given the opportunity to complete it at Breakfast Club and After School Club.
Special Educational Needs.
Our aim is to ensure that your child receives the best education and receives support that is appropriate to their needs.
School works closely with a number of professional services including Speech Therapy, Educational Psychology, Early Years Support Service and Behavioural and Learning Support Services. We also have Family Support Workers based within school.
All children are continually monitored as part of our daily routine. Children are put on the Inclusion and Special Needs Register at either School Action or School Action+ as appropriate. Provision for SEN children will be within mainstream lessons. Pupils are supported by Teaching Assistants at a level appropriate to the child’s needs. At School Action provision is made for the child within mainstream lessons, with extra support as necessary and as outlined in the Group Education Plan. Children at School Action + are similarly catered for through mainstream lessons with an Individual Education Plan and with support from outside agencies as appropriate.
If you have any concerns or queries please contact the Inclusion Manager, Miss Julie Lister.
Gifted and Talented
If your child has excelled in any area this will be recognised and extra provision provided during the school day and through extra curricular activities.
If you have any queries please contact the Co–ordinator, Mr David Needham.
The Curriculum
Our aim is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum. We believe that children learn in a variety of ways. The school encourages your child to think logically, creatively and to develop a lively enquiring mind. Throughout school we believe in supporting your child's personal and cultural development to prepare them for life.
The major component of the curriculum will be the national curriculum. This consists of three core subjects: Maths, English and Science, and the foundation subjects: I.C.T.; Design Technology; History; Geography; Music; Art; Physical Education and R.E.
The subjects are taught to all year groups either on a pure subject basis or through a themed approach.
Literacy
All children have an hour-long literacy lesson which follows national guidelines. In addition extension work is done to develop work from the literacy hour. The school places a high priority on reading and we make a commitment that your child will read daily in the infants’ class, to give them the best possible start to their education.
Maths
Children also have a daily Maths lesson, which again follows national guidelines, and additional lessons to focus on mental maths and investigate maths skills.
ICT
We are very proud of our computer facilities and the up-to-date provision, which we offer to all our children. We not only have two separate suites and a rolling programme of introducing Interactive Whiteboards into classes, but PCs in all classrooms. All computers are networked and all children have access to the Intranet, which is a safeguarded Internet.
RE
The school has a daily act of collective worship sometimes as part of the assembly.
Through education we aim to encourage greater tolerance and understanding between all faiths and communities in school. Religious Education is taught in accordance with the Leeds syllabus.
Parents may withdraw their children from religious education and worship. In order to do this a letter must be sent to, or an appointment made with, the Head teacher.
Sex Education
Sex Education is part of Health Education. The children are taught about their own personal hygiene and related issues. They also receive, from an outside speaker, a talk entitled "Growing Up", which includes puberty and other growing up issues.
We hope that our programme of Sex Education gives the children a sound basis for making balanced decisions about the pattern of their own lives in the future.
The foundation subjects
We believe in creating a curriculum that is relevant to your child and that your child will enjoy taking an active role in. All the topics are themed and related to the national curriculum, with appropriate links between subject areas.
Good Work
We are very keen to promote good behaviour and encourage children to think about their actions. We have a consistent policy throughout the school. In all year groups good behaviour and work is positively encouraged through good work assemblies, which are held in each unit once a week. Each week there is a Head teacher’s Award. These are presented weekly during assembly to pupils who have achieved exceptional standards in academic work or who have demonstrated a positive attitude to school, staff or other pupils. Each child receives a special certificate and sticker.
The school strives to raise standards through positive encouragement and raising the self esteem of our pupils. Individual targets are regularly set in reading, writing and maths. These are small achievable goals that are praised once achieved and then reassessed with the pupil.
SATs Results
We are extremely proud of our results and the continuous improvement in the end of Key Stage SATs results.

The school council is a group of elected children from throughout the school who have a say in the decisions that are made within the school. This is what they said about the advantages of coming to St Bartholomew’s:
“The school’s great. The playground has got some fantastic things in it now like climbing frames and play trails. We’ve also got loads of rooms to work in like the library, music room, food science room, art room and two ICT suites.”
“There are lots of clubs. We have a breakfast club and after school club. But there are also loads of other clubs during and after school. Here are just some of them: cultural club; girls’ and boys’ football; ICT; art; gardening; tennis and golf. Ask your teacher when they are on!”
“The teachers try to make learning exciting. There are special weeks like Cultural Week and Science Week. There are also trips to places like Lineham Farm and Armley Mills. In the summer every class goes on a trip to somewhere special.”
At the back of this document you will find a copy of the Race Equality Policy and the Behaviour policy. There are many other documents and policies to ensure that the school curriculum and the ethos of the school provide an excellent working environment. Please feel welcome to ask if you would like to see them. Copies of these can be found in the community room.
And Finally …..
We are committed to provide a firm foundation and high standards in all areas of the curriculum. In particular we encourage pupils to behave with care and respect to everyone in the community. We will actively promote equal opportunities for all members of the school community.
